English

At Gronau Comprehensive School, English is taught in class. Teaching is differentiated within the class and suitable methods are used, as well as tasks at different levels of difficulty.

In the second semester of year 7, students are divided into advanced and basic levels. A change to the advanced or basic level is possible up to the first semester of year 10, subject to appropriate performance. After this time, students can only be downgraded at the request of their parents or guardians.

Cooperative forms of learning (e.g. tandem exercises, Placemat, milling around, group work) and differentiated forms of learning (e.g. differentiated work material, support systems, weekly plan work) are used.

The English lessons are media-based. This primarily includes the textbook (Orange Line edition from 2014), the workbook and the corresponding audio and video DVD. In addition, the teacher is free to use other differentiated materials as well as films, audio files and instructional videos; there is a selection in the media library.

Work is also competence-oriented. Learners are prepared for the various areas of competence in the subject.

  • Listening (e.g. working with audio-visual media)
  • Speaking (e.g. presentations, project work, oral exams)
  • Reading (e.g. pick-up method, buzz reading)
  • Writing (e.g. with model texts and support systems)
  • Intercultural communicative competence (e.g. mediation, working with authentic material)

Other additional differentiation options are:

  • Learning offices
  • UFO offers (support, encouragement/challenge, organization) by specialist teachers or special needs teachers
  • English Conversation Club as part of the supplementary lessons
