The Institute for Particle Physics at the University of Münster hosted a "Hadron Therapy Masterclass".
The day began with informative presentations by Jona Dreier and David Borgelt, who introduced the students to the basics of particle physics and the use of ion beams in cancer treatment. The presentation on how these particle beams are used in modern medicine was particularly exciting. The participants then used the MatRad software to simulate hadron therapy and learned how ion beams can be used to treat specific tumors.
One of the highlights of the day was the cloud chamber experiment, in which the pupils got hands-on. They were able to experiment with dry ice and observe how the cloud chamber made particles visible. This hands-on experience provided a vivid insight into the world of particle physics.
The day was a great success and aroused great interest among the pupils in physics and its application in medicine.
